Singe

Video piece, 48 seconds, originally shown as a looped projection at Apiary Studios, 2020.

A short video designed for large projection, the action of Singe is the lighting of a match between my teeth, letting the flame burn to my lips before blowing it out. Re-envisioning the death action of the Linton Worm folktale, the process of spoke to a specific memory in my experience of queerphobic violence. Singe continued my work exploring Queer Monstrosity, Northern identity, and weaponising the threatened/threatening body, reclaiming agency over the danger my sexuality poses through self-imposed discomfort and pain.

Video footage Dani Surname and Alex Firth.
